building a shed wall, is it stable enough?
ok i’m build a shed (8×14) and i’ve build all the walls on the ground and they are ready to be put up how ever i stood one of the walls up just to see how it looked. and i noticed that it has a bit of sway to it (left to right) the studs are spaced 16′ apart. i then laid the wall back down attached the the ply wood (1/2′) which of course pervents the swaying, so now the wall is soild. but my Q is: are the walls nnot stable becuase they sways with out the ply? should i even put them up? or am i ok?
should i reinforce the studs with brackets?????
It sounds like you are going about it a little bit ass-backwards. The other walls should provide most of the support, not the plywood.
(Next question would be did you pour a slab for the shed or are you just sticking it on the ground.)
A 14 foot wall should be pretty ridgid when stood up on its bottom plate. The only movement you should feel would be twisting movement, not left-right sway. The studs should be secured to the top and bottom plate with nothing less than two 12D nails and it should be a very secure connection. If not, maybe throw in a screw or two and that should secure them further.
Second piece of advice, throw up all the walls, attach them firmly to the surface, and to eachother, build your roof, THEN put the sheathing up. Plywood is always the last step, the structure should be rock solid before putting up the ply. That being said, it’s just a shed, so the structural integrity isn’t quite as important as building a house, but I’m sure you still want to do a good job.
You may also think about using some metal straps or ties to nail into the top plates at the corners for more ridgidity.
